The White Hat Guide to Buskers & Street Entertainers

You will find some of a variety of buskers and street entertainers at:

  • The Victoria Market on a Saturday morning. For example, you may well find The Band Who Knew Too Much outside the Deli section at about 11 a.m.
  • Most weekday afternoons and evenings will provide a number of buskers in the Bourke Street Mall
  • Saturday and Sunday afternoons at Southgate will usually provide a number of performers
  • Watch out for Bernadette - the accordion player - near Freshwater Place on various days
  • The Balloon Man in the Bourke Street Mall and Queen Victoria Market, twisting his happy balloons whilst quietly spreading his philosophy of doom and despair.

Standing Room Only

Busker in Melbourne StreetHave you ever wondered why someone would busk or how it came to be they started busking? This compilation of street performers and their personal stories will help you find the answer. Buskers are an iconic part of Melbourne’s streetscape, asserting a creative force and adding a layer of movement, colour and sound into the city’s energy. Among the busking assemblage, meet the Japanese Blues Cowboy, Australia’s world record holding sideshow prodigy and the man who drives around the country with a piano in his van. Whatever their reason for busking, Standing Room Only written by Linda Bee applauds them, delights in their talent and individuality and celebrates the vitality they bring to the city.

John Butler

“There is something magical about busking and street performance... when I come across a busker I see someone taking their lives into their hands and making something happen.”

John Butler
