The obvious place to go for Italian food in Melbourne is Lygon Street Carlton.

But this has become something of a tourist trap, and most of the Italian restaurants there that jostle for your custom are overpriced. Go there by all means to drink up the atmosphere but the best value food usually comes from the smaller cafes at the Northern end.

For cheap and cheerful (and loud) Italian food it is hard to beat La Porchetta.

The Waiters Restaurant (sometimes known as the Italian Waiters' Club) in the city is legendary for hearty Italian food, but no longer expect to eat there under $10.
