One of 100 great things to do in Melbourne for
under $10
the White Hat guide
If you have $7 in your pocket and you want to eat well in Melbourne, stroll down to Victoria Street Richmond. It's 20 minutes walk from the city or a $2.20 return tram or train journey. Here you can eat fresh healthy food at low prices. True, some restaurant staff may not speak English, but just point at the pictures and you won't be disappointed.
Probably the best value food in in Melbourne is a giant bowl of Vietnamese soup at somewhere like Thy Thy. For $6.50 you can consume a meal of steaming soup with (say) lean beef, together with a side dish of fresh basil, sprouts, chillies, lemon and Vietnamese mint to be added to the soup at your leisure. But the secret of the soup is the stock. I have read various recipes, and they all involve hours of preparation and labour. Much easier to to spend the $6 to $7 charged by most Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond, Footscray, Springvale or the city and enjoy one of the great dishes of the world. But soup is not the only glory of Vietnamese food. Try it for yourself. You will be hard pressed to find a dish costing more than $10. Our current favourites include Thanh Ha in Victoria Street Richmond And if you want cook your own, check out our Vietnamese Food Stores in Melbourne.
