Germany Sets Aside $130 Billion for Renewable
Energy
German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on 30 May
that Germany, the world's fourth-largest economy and Europe's
biggest, would shutter all of its 17 nuclear power plants between
2015 and 2022, an extraordinary commitment, given that they
currently produce about 28 percent of the country's electricity. It
is by any yardstick an extraordinary (and expensive) commitment that
may well have the collateral benefit of unlocking similar funding
worldwide for renewable energy projects.

The White Hat Guide to Wind Power in AustraliaThere are currently (late 2009) about 50 wind farms operating in Australia. A teasing prospect for Australia is the 'Roaring Forties'. The Roaring Forties, well known to navigators in the days of sail, refers to the latitudes between 40 and 50 degrees south where the lack of landmass to interrupt the westerly winds meant the were strong and consistent. The Roaring Forties lies just south of the Australian continent and takes in part of Tasmania and Bass Strait. It would seem a particularly proposition for offshore wind farms such as are found in Europe. However this style of wind farm currently requires shallow water to make it viable and there is virtually no shallow water available in that region. Future developments may allow this wind power to be harvested economically.
