Bust of Harold Holt

His memorial in Melbourne General Cemetery reads as follows:

HOLT
HAROLD EDWARD
1908 - 1967

ZARA KATE (HOLT) BATE
1909 - 1989

HE LOVED THE SEA

Visit this grave on White Hat Tours' highly entertaining and informative Tour of Melbourne Cemetery.

Harold Holt was Prime Minister of Australia from January 1966 until December 1967 when he disappeared whilst swimming in heavy surf of Cheviot Beach. He is one of the few Australian Prime Ministers to die in office.

His body has never been found, hence the headstone in Melbourne Cemetery is strictly a memorial rather than his gravestone.

Ironically, for someone who died while swimming, he has a swimming pool named after him in Melbourne - The Harold Holt Memorial Pool.
