Walter Burley Griffin 1876 - 1937 Marion Mahoney Griffin 1871 - 1961 ArchitectsWe are currently preparing a short profile. Please return again soon, or email us if you would like to be notified when this entry is complete. Australia has a long history of petty-minded (and often embittered) bureaucrats blocking and interfering with the plans of creative architects. Juan Utzon was to experience this with the Sydney Opera House. Recently in a smaller way, the Victorian Government has denatured the design of Federation Square. But Walter Burley Griffin spent a significant part of his life attempting to have his prize-winning plans for Canberra carried out. In the end, the bureaucrats won and they have the city they deserve rather than the one they could have had. Some of the best examples of the Griffins' work to be found in Melbourne are the Capitol Theatre and Newman College at the University of Melbourne.

Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
