Old Government House in Brisbane is one of the finest examples of a stately colonial house surviving in Queensland. Purpose built as a Government House t it was completed in 1862. The design of architect Charles Tiffin adapts English Classical Revival to the requirements of the tropics as well as providing separate regions for ceremonial use, family living and the servants and service areas. The two storey structure makes fine use of local stones and timbers as capitalising on its position on a raised promontory which originally had parklands leading down to the river on three sides. Old Government House served its official function for Governors of Queensland from 1862 to 1910. After that time it was variously used as a teaching venue for two different universities as well as offices for the National Trust. Recently it underwent major restoration works and was opened to the public in 2010 as part of Queensland's 150th Anniversary Old Government also contains a gallery in the upper bedrooms known as the William Robinson Gallery which contains a permanent display of the works of the Queensland artist William Robinson. White Hat suggests that any visitors interested in Queensland's colonial history should put a visit to this splendid and dignified building high on their agenda.
