The tombstone of Rev. William Crook is interesting for several reasons. Firstly, Rev. Crook was, like Johnny Fawkner, involved in the first official (and abortive) settlement of what is now Victoria by Captain Collins at Sorrento. His tombstone reads: Rev. Wm. Pascoe Crook Born Devonshire England 28th April 1775 One of the 1st Missionaries to the South Seas Who left England in the ship "Duff" in 1796. He was first to translate the Bible into the Polynesian tongue. Founder of the 1st Congregational Church in Australia (at Sydney) in 1810 He arrived with Capt. Collins at Sullivans Bay (Sorrento) by the "Ocean" in 1803 died 14th. June 1846 Aged 71 years |
An interesting fact about Rev. Crook's tombstone is the way it was changed after he was exhumed from the Old Melbourne Cemetery and reburied at the New Melbourne Cemetery (now called the Melbourne General Cemetery). His family took the opportunity to update his C.V. since his tombstone from the Old Melbourne Cemetery read: In memory of the Revd. William Pascoe Crook A zealous and devoted missionary by the Marquesas and Society Islands and a faithful preacher of the gospel in N. S. Wales. Born in Devonshire Engld. on the 29th April 1775 Died at Melbourne on the 14th June 1846. He was one of the first mission- aries who left England in the Ship Duff in the year 1796 |
The old tombstone made from red gum - (is it a tombstone when made of wood?) is still preserved in the city and is visited as part of White Hat Tours' City Walking Tour.

Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
