in.cube8r gallery

|
|
in.cube8r gallery is a shop/gallery which runs like a long term market. It is open to anyone who makes things by hand and supports all things craft, art and hand-made in Melbourne. The gallery is divided up into glass cubicles, shelves, racks and partitions which artists can lease for a small weekly cost over a three month period. There is no commission on items sold. When Whitehat visited in June2008 we discovered a treasure trove of new upcoming artisans as well as designers like Julie Ughetti, with an international reputation. The work ranges from the quirky to sophisticated and given the diversity of art work on display you appear to be guaranteed to find eclectic original pieces. |

John Brack

John Brack Australia 1920–1999 Collins St, 5p.m. 1955 oil on canvas 114.8
x 162.8 cm
National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Purchased, 1956 © National Gallery of
Victoria
Reproduced by permission of National Gallery of Victoria
This exhibition brings together a significant body of
John Brack's paintings and works
on paper, including pictures that have developed an iconic status and others
that have rarely, if ever, been seen publicly since they were first exhibited.
Brrack produced compelling pictures which captured the essential characteristics
of his subjects involved in everyday activities and, in some of his most
engaging series, he depicted the characters of the racecourse, children at
school and professional ballroom dancers. Throughout his career Brack also
painted the nude, still life subjects and portraits, both of family and friends
- including artists Fred Williams
and John Perceval - as well as commissioned subjects, such as
Barry Humphries as his
alter-ego Edna Everage. The exhibition encompasses John Brack's complete career,
incorporating over 150 works from all of his major series. Many of Brack's most
familiar paintings will be included in the exhibition, such as Collins St.
5p.m, The bar and The Old Time. |

The Independent Type

|
|
The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria is a free
exhibition that celebrates Victoria's rich and diverse written culture,
highlighting the stories, the voices and the spirit of independence that have
made our literature unique. With this important exhibition the State Library of
Victoria celebrates Melbourne's status as a UNESCO City of Literature. The
exhibition traces Victoria's literary evolution from traditional Indigenous
storytelling through colonial classics to the vibrant contemporary writing
scene. This thread is interwoven with the grand narrative of Victoria's history,
and of the people and events that made Melbourne marvellous.
It celebrates the work of award-winning contemporary authors such as Booker
Prize winner Peter Carey, crime writer Peter Temple and young-adult novelist
Sonya Hartnett, as well as non-fiction authors including
Manning Clark and
Germaine Greer. It also features
important early writers such as
Marcus Clarke and Henry
Handel Richardson, and embraces literary 'rascals' like left-wing novelist
Frank Hardy and controversies such as the notorious
Ern Malley hoax.
The exhibition examines a diversity of 'literatures' – the printed book,
electronic media, the spoken word and even a possum-skin cloak. It looks into
Victoria's thriving literary niches, including poetry, theatre, literary
journals and 'zines, and children's literature from I Can Jump Puddles to
Animalia. It explores every aspect of the world of books and writing,
from booksellers and publishers to literary awards and festivals. It tells the
stories of passionate and enterprising figures such as State Library founder
Sir Redmond Barry, the eccentric
EW Cole and his Book Arcade,
independent publishers McPhee Gribble, and Lonely Planet founders
Tony and Maureen Wheeler.
The exhibition comprises a fascinating display of rare books and original
manuscripts, documents, photographs, artworks and installations. It showcases
the richness of the State Library of Victoria's literary history collection, and
draws upon the collections of individuals and organisations across the country. |
