in.cube8r gallery is a shop/gallery which runs like a long term market. It is open to anyone who makes things by hand and supports all things craft, art and hand-made in Melbourne. The gallery is divided up into glass cubicles, shelves, racks and partitions which artists can lease for a small weekly cost over a three month period. There is no commission on items sold. When Whitehat visited in June2008 we discovered a treasure trove of new upcoming artisans as well as designers like Julie Ughetti, with an international reputation. The work ranges from the quirky to sophisticated and given the diversity of art work on display you appear to be guaranteed to find eclectic original pieces. |

Tim Burton: The Exhibition
|

Tracing Burton’s visual imagination from his earliest childhood drawings
through his mature work in film, the exhibition Tim Burton: The Exhibition
brings together over 700 examples of rarely or never-before-seen drawings,
paintings, photographs, storyboards, moving-image works, puppets, maquettes,
costumes, and cinematic ephemera, and includes an extensive film series spanning
his 27-year career.
The exhibition follows the course of Burton’s career, with childhood
ephemera, juvenilia, and amateur short films from his youth in Burbank,
California; cartoons and drawings from his time at California Institute of the
Arts; and examples of his first professional work at The Walt Disney Studios.
Burton’s artistic output includes shorts Vincent (1982) and
Frankenweenie (1984); and 15 feature films including Pee-Wee’s Big
Adventure (1985), Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward
Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992), The Nightmare Before
Christmas (1993), Ed Wood (1994), Mars Attacks! (1996),
Sleepy Hollow (1999), Planet of the Apes (2001), Big Fish
(2003), The Corpse Bride (2005), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
(2005), Sweeney Todd (2007) and Alice in Wonderland (2010). |

Australian Made: 100 Years of Fashion
|
|
From first European settlement the supply of clothing and the way Australian men and women presented themselves in the new colonies was of vital importance. Whether reflecting status and position in a newly formed society, or exhibiting new found wealth and flamboyance, the nuanced language of fashion was of particular concern for the burgeoning and diverse society.
Drawing on the collection of Australian Fashion and Textiles, this exhibition scopes the rise of fashion in Australia from the 1850s to 1950s, while speculating on the fashionable trends and demands of a 100 year development of an Australian style of fashion.
The exhibition includes rare early examples of labelled garments from the mid 19th century and a range of dresses, tailored items and accessories that were made and retailed in Australia from the 1850s to 1950s. It also includes a selection of paintings and photographs from the NGV collection showing how the garments were worn. |

Stick it! Collage in Australian Art

Featuring over forty works primarily drawn from the NGV Collection together
with a small number of loans, Stick it! explores graphic and eye-catching
works created by pasting and applying paper, ephemera and other materials to a
base.
This free exhibition features a selection of collages made in the past
seventy years by some of Australia's leading practitioners of this technique,
including Sidney Nolan, James
Gleeson, Robert Klippel, Mike Brown, Elizabeth Gower, Mandy Martin, Nick Mangan
and Brook Andrew among others. |

Until recently, this location hosted a large and popular market. That market has relocated to Newcomb (see below). The remaining Geelong Mills Matket now has a large array of retro advertising signs, furniture, and larger and quirky mechanical and industrial equipment. White Hat can recommend this market as a good source for those looking to do a quirky fitout as well as to theatre companies and film-makers looking for genuine period props. It now functions more as a warehouse so give a ring before making a special trip. |
