Boxing Day Test Match

The annual Boxing Day Test Match has long been on e of the sporting highlights of Melbourne. This year's Boxing Day Test Match is between Australia and South Africa. Like all cricket test matches it can last up to 5 days or finish earlier. It can also be interrupted by inclement weatrher. If this sounds all too complicated then White Hat recommends you ask a local to explain the intracacies of this arcane game to you. Don't bother asking White Hat - we'll be at the cricket.

Ironwood Chamber Ensemble

The acclaimed Ironwood Chamber Ensemble is made up of Rachael Beesley (violin) Julia Fredersdorff (violin), Nicole Forsyth (viola) and Kirsty Vickers (cello). Their program today features Mozart’s C minor string quintet and a selection of shorter pieces celebrating of the approaching New Year, including works by Josef and Johann Strauss the younger, Spohr, Boccherini and Schubert. Please be seated by 2.50pm as the live broadcasts begin promptly at 3.00pm.

Moonlight Cinema

An open air cinema on the lawns of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Relax with a picnic as the sun sets and the screen lights up. Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown, approximately 8.30 pm. The majority of films shown are commercial and popular American movies so they should have a wide appeal. You can purchase tickets at the Moonlight Cinema box office from 7pm Tuesday to Sunday. The box office is located near the entry to the cinema. Bentleigh Sunday Market

The Bentleigh Sunday Market is run by the Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central. Since 1977, over $1.7 million has been raised to support local charities and Rotary Projects. There are about 150 stalls available, where you will find plants, clothing, cosmetics, jewellery, books, videos, tools, toys, crafts, pre loved goods, and more! As far as White Hat is aware, this is one of the few regular markets in Melbourne where you can still see an auctioneer formally auctioning of job lots oftrash & treasure and other items.

Greensborough Community Market

A market with 100 stalls selling fruit, veg, plants, second hand good and home made products as well as trash and treasure. After operating for over 30 years in Greensborough, the market has moved to LaTrobe University due to redevelopment works in the Greensborough precinct. in.cube8r gallery is a shop/gallery which runs like a long term market. It is open to anyone who makes things by hand and supports all things craft, art and hand-made in Melbourne. The gallery is divided up into glass cubicles, shelves, racks and partitions which artists can lease for a small weekly cost over a three month period. There is no commission on items sold. When Whitehat visited in June2008 we discovered a treasure trove of new upcoming artisans as well as designers like Julie Ughetti, with an international reputation. The work ranges from the quirky to sophisticated and given the diversity of art work on display you appear to be guaranteed to find eclectic original pieces.

Milleara Shopping Centre Craft Market

Some markets situated inside shopping malls are rather sad affairs, but not this one. White Hat found a range of quality hand made goods as wll as furniture and homemaking goods. This is just the place to pick up some lovingly made baby clothes. There is also a a strong community feel which sets apart from many markets of this type.
