Australian Food Names

Some Australian food names may be unfamiliar to overseas readers. This short list may help.

Common Australian names

Regional differences

There are some regional differences in naming within Australia. For instance, in New South Wales, spring onions are often referred to as shallots.

To avoid confusion, various food authorities have attempted to standardise names across the country. See for instance:
