The White Hat Guide to Walking & Jogging in Melbourne

Melbourne's parks and gardens are ideal for walking or jogging. Needless to say, the larger the park, the longer the walk or run (unless you prefer to go around in circles.

The more serious jogger or runner may want to investigate 'The Tan' running track circuit in the Kings Domain close to the Botanic Gardens. (Ask your guide on a Hite Hat Tours why it is known as 'The Tan'.) Another circuit is available on the other side of the river at Birrarung Marr. The external concourse of Telstra Dome also makes a suitable jogging circuit - following the wall gives an 850m circuit while a trip around the outer edge is one kilometre.

For a cultivated park with European plantings, statues and monuments, it is hard to beat the four adjoining parks - Alexandra Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens, Kings Domain and the Botanic Gardens. For a bushland walk close to the city we recommend Studley Park. To watch the world go by, put on your best lycra and head for the Esplanade and beachfront at St Kilda.

If you are interested in history and heritage, we would recommend a guided walking tour with someone who knows and loves the city.

You will also find jogging tracks at Royal Park, Prices Park, Fawkner Park, Fitzroy Gardens & Treasury Gardens.

For lengthier walks or runs, there is an excellent network of trails around the city and suburbs. You can find these documented at Cycling in Melbourne.

Bright Alpine Four Peaks
