The White Hat Guide to Fashion in Melbourne & Victoria
 | Madam Virtue & Co.
presents the Japanese Couture Master Designers | | Dean Hewitt presents an installation from his archive collection of the great Japanese designers: Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons and Kenzo.
Japanese design first burst onto the fashion scene to make a lasting impression back in 1982, when some 12 designers showed their collections at the Paris prêt-à-porter shows. Today fashion is dominated by such Japanese designers as Issey Miyake, Kenzo, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons, Tsumori Chisato and Hanae Mori. The refreshing use of inventive shapes and monochrome tones, particularly black, has shocked, revitalised and stimulated the fashion world to reach new heights.

 | Collectors' Sunday Market | | Presenting a dynamic new market, this aims to be a hybrid of a European
market, such as in London, Paris or Barcelona, with an Australian accent, such
as Hobart’s Salamanca market. Making it the ultimate eco-friendly market where
new and pre-loved goods can become someone's treasure. The Piazza is located
just off of Docklands Rd, near the corner of Dopel Way. Melway Reference Map 2
Ref C 4. Fantastic access by train, tram or car. Combining Arts, Antiques,
Retro, Vintage, Books, Plants, Children’s Toys, Pet Goods, Locally made Soaps
and Personal Toiletries with a section for ‘boot sale’. Some fresh produce
available. Permanent and casual stalls available. Visit
www.collectorsmarket.com.au for
more info. | | 10am to 4pm Sundays | | Waterfront Piazza - Docklands | | |
|
| | Flock 'N' Flog Market | | Exhorbitant retail rental costs have pretty much pushed small-time arts & crafters out of the market. Which is why you see so much cutesy craft crap around town - if it's not easily palatable it's not going to sell in high enough volumes to pay display costs. Crafters who might want to be experimental, subversive or political with their work are forced to produce benign and boring stuff just to cover costs. | | 5pm to 7pm, Tuesday 9th December 2008 | | Flock to corner Latrobe & Swanston Sts for directions - | | |
|
| | in.cube8r gallery | | in.cube8r gallery is a shop/gallery which runs like a long term market. It is open to anyone who makes things by hand and supports all things craft, art and hand-made in Melbourne. The gallery is divided up into glass cubicles, shelves, racks and partitions which artists can lease for a small weekly cost over a three month period. There is no commission on items sold. When Whitehat visited in June2008 we discovered a treasure trove of new upcoming artisans as well as designers like Julie Ughetti, with an international reputation. The work ranges from the quirky to sophisticated and given the diversity of art work on display you appear to be guaranteed to find eclectic original pieces. | | Tues 11 to 5, Wed to Sat 11 to 6, Sun 12 to 4 | | 321 Smith Street - Fitzroy | | Enquiries: (03) 8415 0321 |

TOURISM NEWS
Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
