Writers at the Convent
|
|
Australia’s newest literary festival comes to the historic Abbotsford Convent. The inaugural Reader’s Feast Writers at the Convent will be held in February 2008 at Melbourne’s historic Abbotsford Convent with authors from Australia, the UK, USA and Malaysia in challenging and entertaining conversation. Sessions will take in Paris, Rio, Morocco, the Australian outback, the Camino and China. Politics and discussions will encompass the rise and fall of the American empire, the media, Australia as seen by the rest of the world, pornography and war.
New fiction, gay writing and magazines will be a part of the literary program with food also a major feature with Maggie Beer, Andrew Dwyer, Kylie Kwong and Stephanie Alexander. Kaz Cooke will look at families and kids. There will be a look at the history of the Melbourne theatre and the beauty of the book itself shall be celebrated.
Books will be launched by Rachel Matthews and Peter McConnell. International authors Tan Twan Eng, Cullen Murphy and Catherine O’Flynn will join locals including Peter Doherty, Greg Elms, Paul Ham, Kate Llewellyn and Chris Womersley.
Visitors can enjoy the delights of the Convent Bakery, a vegetarian lunch or dinner at Lentil As Anything or a cleansing ale at Handsome Steve’s House of Refreshment. You can also take a guided tour of the Convent, or simply take time out between sessions to wander the beautiful gardens. |

TOURISM NEWS
Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
