The White Hat Guide to Seniors Events in Melbourne

There are many government-funded organisations which receive many millions of dollars in funding to promote activities and services to seniors in Victoria and Melbourne. We so not seek or receive such funding so our information is independent of the usual government spin. For information about 'official' and  commercially funded events we suggest you read the "official" press releases from government bodies or go to government or government-funded tourism websites.

For the rest of you, we hope you will find some events and information of interest below.

What better place to relive a chance meeting by moonlight than under the stars at the Music Bowl. If the weather is fine White Hat expects that this event could be a lockout so get there early. Gates to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl open at 4pm. If you are intending to come to a concert with a family or group of friends, it is advisable that you arrive together or arrange to gather outside the gate to avoid your group being split if the gates close. In the past you have been able to bring your own drinks but only plastic glasses. We will verify this year's conditions when the information becomes available.

Free Concert at Sidney Myer Music BowlThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with Lutz Koehler (conductor) and Maxwell Foster (piano) perform:

The Sidney Myer Free Orchestral Concerts in the Music Bowl are one of the highlights of the Melbourne Summer. The businessman and philanthropist Sidney Myer left a trust to benefit the people of Melbourne and Australia. Not only did this trust make possible the building of the public Music Bowl, it continues to continues to contribute to the quality of life of Melburnians through works and events such as the annual free concerts.

Gates open at 4pm and the concert starts at 7pm. White Hat recommends you get there early because, if the weather is fine it can fill quite quickly. This is the ideal place to have a champagne picnic with friend under the stars while listening to classical music. You are allowed to bring reasonable amounts of food and alcohol but no breakable glasses, sharp objects, or seating which obstruct the view of others. Before you decide to turn it into a fully-fledged camping expedition we suggest you check the conditions of entry.

Plant Fair in the Yarra Valley

Gardener's heaven - a lovely garden and the opportunity to buy from a wide selection of rare and unusual plants. Over one special weekend, Australia's Open Garden Scheme is once again bringing together exhibitors from Victoria and interstate offering choice perennials, rare trees and shrubs, Australian natives, bulbs and succulents, as well as sculpture and specialist tools. It is an ideal opportunity for gardeners to meet and talk with expert growers of the most interesting and unusual plants, and to find something out of the ordinary.

  • Lubra Bend, a fascinating garden that carries off the combination of traditional and contemporary elements with real flair, is the venue for our sixth annual Plant Fair.
  • Within the fifty-year-old cypress hedges is an exceptionally exciting new Australian plant garden designed by Phil Johnson, complete with massive rocks, water and a billabong. Beyond, the Guildford Bell-designed house is surrounded by a mature country garden with perennial borders, shrubberies, croquet lawn, flourishing vegetable garden and small orchard.
  • Leave your purchases in the plant creche and take a leisurely stroll around the garden. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Melway 275:G2. Due to roadworks on the Healesville road near Yarra Glen we recommend that visitors travel via Healesville rather than Yarra Glen. From Healesville take the Healesville-Yarra Glen Rd (C726) towards Yarra Glen; turn left into Simpson Lane

SCIENCE NEWS
Australia's first female Nobel Prize Winner

White Hat congratulates Dr Elizabeth Blackburn on becoming Australia's first female Nobel Prize Winner. Readers of our site will know that we have predicted that she would become a Nobel Prize winner for some time and that Elizabeth Blackburn has long been on our list of 200 Significant Australians and 100 Important Living Australians despite the National Trust Living Treasures list passing over her and people like Fields Medal winner Terry Tao in favour of minor media presenters. Congratulations Dr Blackburn from those many thousands who studied science and Melbourne University along with you.
