('Dandy Market')

White Hat - THE place to find markets in Victoria

Over the years White Hat has become recognised as THE place to list and find markets in Melbourne & Victoria and our markets pages consistently receive over 1,000 visitors a day with over 3,000 a day at weekends. Unlike many websites which merely LIST markets, White Hat VISITS markets as witnessed by the photographs. Although we visit hundreds of markets every year we can never cover all of them so please let us know if any of our information is out of date. With details on over 400 markets, users regularly tell us that the White Hat listing is the best and most comprehensive source of markets in Victoria available either on the web or in print.

Dandenong Market (just known to the locals as 'dandy market') is probably the most comprehensive of Melbourne's suburban markets. Although not as large as the Victoria Market, it has a wider range of wares on sale. Everything from carpets to stuffed animals.

The vegetable section is large and well priced, there are some great nut shops as well as the usual meat and fish. Close by are good Middle Eastern and Indian food stores. Every now and then you will see a stall run by uncomfortable looking youths who look as though they are ready to pack up and move on at a moments notice - I'm sure the goods are legal.

The Dandenong area is home to a large number of ethnic groups, and the atmosphere in the market reflects this.

It is hard to see why anybody shops at the nearby mall.

The official publicity reads:

Staff at Dandenong Market

"Dandenong Market is situated in the heart of Dandenong and embraces many cultures. Operating since 1866, the market provides a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere. With friendly service, an amazing range of fresh produce, including a newly refurbished fruit and vegetables section, the market has something for everyone. Currently undergoing a major redevelopment, the new General Merchandise hall opened in October 2009 offering shoppers over 130 stalls featuring fashion, footwear, homewares, electronics, jewellery, toys and giftware. The new produce hall offers a fabulous range of nuts, dried fruits, exotic spices and grocery items, plus a bakery and wine shop. The new Meat, fish and deli hall, due to open in early November will offer shoppers a fantastic array of butchers, poultry and seafood shops, deli’s and honey.

The market attracts a diverse range of customers from local shoppers to overseas visitors and tourists from Victoria and interstate. Visitors come to the market for unusual items that cannot be found in conventional supermarkets and shopping centres. Offering consistent quality at bargain prices unrivalled in South Eastern Melbourne, the market provides shoppers with a highly personable shopping experience."
