The newspaper report on the funeral of W.J.T.Calrke THE LATE MR.W.J.T. CLARKE'S FUNERAL The funeral of the late Mr.W.J.T Clarke took place yesterday, and was very largely attended. The cortege left Essendon at half-past 12, and consisted of the hearse, twelve mourning carriages, and a large number of private vehicles and wagonettes, and by the time it reached St. James' Cathedral it had swelled very considerably. The cathedral was crowded in every part, and the service was conducted by the Very Rev, the Dean of Melbourne, assisted by the Revs J. Watson, M.B. Becher, and Edward Puckle. At it's termination the "Dead March In Saul" was played by Mr. Ford, the organist. The procession on leaving St. James' Cathedral was more than a quarter of a mile long. The foremost carriages were occupied by the three sons of the deceased and other relatives. Among those who followed were the Chief Secretary, The Commissioner of Customs, the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. Henry Miller, the Hon. T.J. Smith, the Hon. Phillip Russel, Mr Inspector Hare, Mr E.P.S. Sturt, P.M., Mr Call, P.M., Captain Amsinck, Mr Robert Power, Mr. Herbert Power, Mr Pavey, and numerous other well-known colonists. Altogether there were about sixty vehicles. At the cemetery the officiating clergymen were the Dean of Melbourne and the Rev.J. Watson. The pall bearers were the Hon.J. G Francis, the Hon. E Cohen, Mr E.P.S. Sturt, Mr Inspector Hare, Mr Langhorn, Mr Greenlaw, Mr. Wilson, and Mr Wm. Smith. The funeral arrangements were entrusted to Messrs.Sleight, of Collins Street, and the arrangements were in all respects satisfactory. The remains were buried in the family vault of Mr. W. J. Clarke, of Sunbury, one of the deceased's sons. The elaborate monument, one of the largest in Melbourne General Cemetery, reads:

Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
