John Macadam

John Macadam
scientist

We are currently preparing a short profile. Please return again soon, or email us if you would like to be notified when this entry is complete.

John Macadam was a brilliant young scientist who emigrated to Australia soon after his graduation from Glasgow University.

He achieved much in his short life. He impressed Baron von Mueller (the man who laid out the original plantings of the Melbourne General Cemetery) to the extent that von Mueller decided to name the famous Macadamia Nut after him.

If the newspaper The Argus is to be believed (and it often isn't), John Macadam disgraced himself in his official position on the Exploration Committee, by arriving late and drunk to greet the arrival of Bourke & Wills' remains.

He is not to be confused with the Scottish engineer of the same name who invented the system of making roads known as 'Macadamized Roads'.

TOURISM NEWS
Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses White Hat Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May 2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed, Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find details of the tour at White Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at Qantas In Flight Magazine.
