The White Hat Guide to Sir John O'Shanassy

Sir John O'Shanassy
Businessman,politician,premier
1818 - 5 May 1883

'Long John O'Shannasy' was premier of Victoria in 1857 and from 1858—1859 and then for a third time in 1861—1863. As might be gathered from the gigantic Celtic Cross that forms his monument in Melbourne General Cemetery, he was born in Ireland. In fact, members of parliament often found his rough brogue almost impossible to understand without assistance.

He was a Collins Street draper, and his wife Margaret continued to run the shop through much of his public career.

He floated the Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company in 1857 (and later, in his position of Chairman of the Colonial Bank, loaned the company 32,000 pounds). He appointed a Royal Commission into the 'overpaid, overstaffed Public Service', as well as slashing state teachers' salaries and abandoning training at the Model School.

The impressive Mansion Tara was constructed for him in the late 1850s.
