at the Sydney Opera House

Opera Australia presents Puccini's opera La Bohème. In this production, created by director Simon Phillips, Opera Australia is proud to present a Bohème for now – just as romantic, just as true, but with the immediacy and edge of a contemporary setting, and some of Opera Australia's finest young artists. Relive the romance as Rodolfo sings Che gelida manina, revel in Musetta's showstopping waltz and let Puccini's unerring instinct for melody win your heart. The irresistible Hye Seoung Kwon opens in the role of Mimì and exciting young tenor Aldo Di Toro is her Rodolfo. Antoinette Halloran and Warren Mok take their places later in the season. The band of bohemians includes José Carbó, Warwick Fyfe and Jud Arthur. Amelia Farrugia and Taryn Fiebig share the show-stopping role of Musetta and Maestro Giovanni Reggioli conducts. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Turandot

Opera Queensland's production of Puccini's Turandot is brought to the stage by one of Australia's boldest interpreters, Graeme Murphy. The Forbidden City of ancient Peking is full of colour and movement, boasting spectacular sets and costumes only matched by Puccini’s glorious score, including the unforgettable Nessun dorma, one of the most-recorded arias in the opera canon. We welcome back American soprano Cynthia Makris as Turandot and Badri Maisuradze as the persistent Calaf.

Madama Butterfly

Opera Australia present Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly. Moffatt Oxenbould's classic production, designed by Peter England and Russell Cohen, captures the grace and delicacy of Puccini's exquisite creation. Translucent bamboo screens, red silk and balletic graces define an imagined world for an all too real story, and the vivid colours are echoed by the tantalisingly evocative music and melting arias of this glorious romance. Nicole Youl broke hearts in her Sydney debut as Cio-Cio-San. She now brings her moving interpretation of Madama Butterfly to Melbourne. She is joined by Sally-Anne Russell in the role of Suzuki and Rosario La Spina as the fickle Pinkerton. And to conduct, Opera Australia welcomes back Taiwanese conductor and Puccini-expert, Shao-Chia Lu. Performed in Italian with English surtitles.

1pm on 22 November 2008 and 7.30pm on 11, 15, 19, 26 & 19 November 2008 and 4, 6, 9 & 13 December 2008
