The early general-purpose keyboard concertoDuring the 18th century a large church organ, a small chamber organ, harpsichord and (later) early piano were often used interchangeably. The composers and performers used what was available in the space on the day. It is common to see one part labelled as 'clavier' - literally 'keyboard' - without specification for which sort of keyboard. When composers or performers had a choice they obviously used the 'clavier' which they felt suited best.
