Farinelli - the White Hat guide

cover

This film will not disappoint those looking for a costume drama based around the opera wars in London in the eighteenth century. Although based on the real characters of the castrato Farinelli and his brother, Popora and Handel, much of the plot is fictional.

The castrato voice heard throughout the film is a skilful electronic blending of male and female voice. Despite the 'authenticity in early music' movement, there seem to be no advocates prepared to pursue his ideals to the extent of becoming a real castrato himself.

Much of the theme of the film is based around the conflict between well executed second rate music (as represented by Popora and Faranelli's brother) and the music of genius (as represented by Handel). Don't expect a script with the insights and brilliance of an Amadeus. However, as an entertaining background to Italian opera seria of the time it is well worth watching.
