A lavish European production of the operetta starts this week. This has a fanciful plot full of unbelievable twists and turns, larger than life characters all with lavish sets and costumes. The promoters say the Europeans do this better than anyone. Obviously they haven’t seen our local long-running production of The Merry Widow based in Perth and starring 'Our Rose'. It outdoes the European productions in all these areas. Details at Theatre in Melbourne.
Several major architecture awards are to be announced over the next couple of months. We expect to see Fed Square pick up a number of important design awards. For those of you who would like to experience a concert in the glass surrounded performance space overlooking the river, try the Pro Arte concert on Sunday afternoon at BMW Edge.
Other music this weekend includes the Blues Train at Queenscliff. An ABC free concert, and a major rave party – Belfast 11. Ginger Mick told me all about it but I couldn’t understand a word he was saying. If you want to rave until 5 in the morning, at a freestyle retro rave up, details are at Popular Music in Melbourne.
Hidden Pubs in MelbourneMelbourne has its high profile pubs, but some of our favourites are hidden away and only known to the locals. We like it that way. Her are some of our favourites.

I always feel that there is nothing like an orchid show to wind down from a freestyle retro rave up. Well I'm in luck because this weekend at Maribyrnong there is an orchid show. Last time I attended an orchid show they were all different sizes and shapes and varieties. The growers still have a long way to go before they can match the achievements of the Begonia Festival. Thousands of begonias all the same size and shape – now that’s a real flower show. However, it is worth supporting these orchid growers who are still trying to learn the secret of how to make them all look the same. Details at Flowers & Garden Shows in Melbourne.
We had an impressive number of entries for our competition about the original name of Exhibition Street.

The Australian championships are at Melbourne Park for three days next week. I expect to see Roy & HG there explaining the intricacies of the moves in layman’s language.
Every day during school and university term we receive 20 or 30 requests (or demands) for help with projects. Here is a recent sample. "hi, i am a student and i'm studing the revolution of australian art. one such part of the history of australian art that i've been having problems is pop art. Is it possible to send your personal views on pop art to ...@uow.edu.au thank you" "Dear whom ever this may concern, My name is Sarah .... and I attend .... which is in Sydney. I have a history assignment to do on murders within Australia during the 1920's and the 1930's. I have been getting some information from your websites about the gun alley atrocity but there is some extra information I can only get if I go on a tour of Melbourne. This is simply impossible for me as I live in Sydney. I was wondering if it was possible for you to send any information you can on the gun alley murder to my email address as this would help me immensly with my assignment. If possible could you also send any information on other murders which happened in Australia during this time period. My assingment is due in about 2 weeks so as soon as possible would be best. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my assingment and it would be very helpful if you could send some information to me. Yours sincerely Sarah ...." Sometimes we long for some good old fashioned spam that is simply promising to change our physical attributes or earn us a million dollars in 6 months.
Ladies, if you fancy a romantic ramble in the woods with a debonair, tall, blonde gentleman followed by a gourmet lunch using the mushrooms you have gathered, then you should try Cameron Russell’s mushroom hunt. Cameron Russell has become so famous that Russel Street is named after him. Well OK, I’m exaggerating a bit. Russel Street was named after Earl Russell, and Cameron isn’t all that tall. But he does know his mushrooms. Details at Mushrooms.
The 29th May is the anniversary of John Batman’s famous treaty with local Aborigines at Indented Head in 1835. This treaty and Aboriginal history has become a minefield of political correctness and differing opinions. Maybe to mark the event I will have a little stomp through that minefield in the next newsletter.
Just a heads up for some events in early June. Chocfest at the Exhibition Buildings, St Kilda Film Festival, lunchtime theatre (theatre and a meal for $8) and Avril Levigne. All details on the appropriate dates of our Calendar of Events.
"I'm ashamed to say I do not visit the website regularly but I absolutely love reading your newsletter. What do I like the most? Your opinions. I'm getting so sick of hearing about anything where the 'reporter' simply states the facts. I may not always agree with someone else's opinions, but neither do I need to. This is what promotes debate and informed conversation. It may also be what might change my mind about one of my own opinions, hearing all sides, doing some research and then making an informed decision. Thank you White Hat for making my Sundays informative, entertaining and thought-provoking. And for giving me a view about the Melbourne I never knew existed. Kate Bundoora"
