Books Romantic outings Film festivals Craft and dance Music Open days Reader feedback +----------------------------------------------------+ BOOKS For fans of children’s book illustrator Terry Denton, there is a free family event at the State Library where he takes a journey though his books. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Lifestyle/Children.asp Those who would like to know more about the Book of Kells can attend free workshops. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/100GT/Arts/Workshops.asp And if you are a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast you will find a small but fascinating exhibition at the Baillieu Library at Melbourne University with private press publications and memorabilia from other nutters (sorry Holmesaphiles). Each of the display cases is labelled Case 1, Case 2, etc. +----------------------------------------------------+ ROMANTIC OUTINGS If you are looking for a romantic outing and are prepared to spend $85 per head then you can join mushroom maestro Cameron Russell on the Mornington Peninsula for a mushroom hunt and feast. Wander hand in hand through the early morning mists searching for mushrooms and then have them prepared by a master chef If you only want to spend $10 per head, then you can wander hand in hand through the gardens of Burnley College gardens and at the end share a soup made from vegetables in the garden. Details of both activities at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Lifestyle/Romantic.asp If on the other hand your romantic inclinations don’t actually extend to the spending of money, you can wander hand in hand with the object of your affections to the Fitzroy Library for a free demonstration on composting and worm farming. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Festivals/Garden.asp +----------------------------------------------------+ FILM FESTIVALS A particularly lively Spanish Film Festival gets under way next week in St Kilda. All films are subtitled in English and come with additional special comments in Spanish from the audience. There is also a film festival at Phillip Island. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Festivals/Film.asp +----------------------------------------------------+ COUNTRY FESTIVALS There is a harvest festival at Beechworth and a community festival at Churchill. The latter town changed its name from (I can’t remember what) to Churchill on the death of Winston Churchill to honour his memory. I suspect there may be a town out there with secret plans to attract a funding boost from a state Labor government by renaming itself at the appropriate time to “Gough”. Details of these festivals at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Victoria/Events/EventsV.asp +----------------------------------------------------+ CRAFT & DANCE You may have experienced little Jenny. She comes home from school disappears into the playroom and the dress-up box An hour later she sits the family down to witness hew newly improvised dance performance and they all say “That’s very good Jenny”. Over the years the dress-up box gains various additions and alterations, the performances gain a sound system and increase in length, and unwitting visitors are shanghaied into the audience and we all applaud (often prematurely) and say “That’s very good Jenny”. I would ask those supportive parents out there to remember that it is the rest of us who have to live with the consequences. I am therefore just a little alarmed at the prospect of Craft Victoria’s “free dance performance displaying theatrical costume designs by a designer/performer” I am sure the lady in question is very talented, but I may leave that to you to find out. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Events/Dates/05May/21.asp +----------------------------------------------------+ MUSIC Music this week includes the continuation of the Jazz Festival, the opening of the Mikado and performances by a local string quartet, the Flinders Quartet, including a concert at Montsalvat. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Music/MusicM.html +----------------------------------------------------+ OPEN DAYS This weekend there is an open day at the Chakra Lounge in Richmond where you can find out about, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga Demonstration Class, Shiatsu, Thai & Remedial Massage and Pranic Healingand lots of other stuff. I won’t be going because I plan to emerge the end of the end of this decade with an unblemished record of never having known what Pilates was. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Festivals/Lifestyle.asp The Sophia Mundi School in Richmond also has an open day and fete, and St Mary’s Anglican Chuch in North Melbourne is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a fete. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Festivals/FairsFetes.asp We also have a new page on our website which will be featuring selected garage sales. You can find this at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Markets/GarageSales.asp +----------------------------------------------------+ READER FEEDBACK “I also love to receive your newsletter. I am hoping in early June to go to Melbourne and visit a lot of book stores. I believe there are a lot tucked away in alleys and so on. Is it possible for you to do a profile on a few? It would be greatly appreciated if you could! Keep up the good work. Julie” Julie, we’ll see what we can do in a future issue regarding bookshops.
