EXHIBITIONS
If you are the sort of person who gets excited about soft furnishings then you have an exciting weekend ahead. The Furnitex Exhibition is on at Jeff’s Shed and you can go along and spend your time in the company of like minded people. There is also a PGA Golf show coming up next week. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Places/JeffsShed.asp

+----------------------------------------------------+

MONTSALVAT SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
Just the thing if you enjoy watching men in tights in a Renaissance setting.

+----------------------------------------------------+

FLOWERS
This week there is the monthly open day at the plant cottage at the Botanic Gardens. There is also an orchid show at Werribee – they seem to have some secret fertiliser down that way. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Festivals/Garden.asp

+----------------------------------------------------+

MUSIC
There is a particularly wide range of music in Melbourne this week. A concert of Elton John music by the Melbourne Gay & Lesbian Choir, free French chamber music at the gallery (it helps if you speak French), a Kiezman band (it helps if you speak Yiddish), the MOTION Party at the gallery with Mr Jigga and various DJs (it helps if you speak jive), world music at The Boite (it helps if you speak Swahili), the 25th anniversary dinner of the Early Music Society of Victoria (it helps if you speak Latin), country music in Hume (it helps if you speak slow), and sound art at RMIT and the Planetarium. There are also performances by Pink Floyd impersonators at the casino. Details of most of these can be found at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Music/MusicM.asp

+----------------------------------------------------+

COUNTRY VICTORIA
The big event this weekend is the Australian Sheep & Wool Show in Bendigo. Everything you ever wanted to know about sheep and a fair bit that you didn’t. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Victoria/Bendigo.asp

THE NAMES OF MELBOURNE’S STREETS AND LANES

Please note: This section of the newsletter has been removed as it forms part of a forthcoming publication or because it is forms part of our Questing activities. If you find yourself on a tour where the guide is White Hat Accredited they are likely to know the answer to many questions you may have in this area. All guides on White Hat Tours are White Hat Accredited.

+----------------------------------------------------+

FILM
Both the international and underground film festivals are on this week. They are known as MIFF and MUFF, so make sure you know which one you want to go to. If you go to MIFF thinking that it’s MUFF you’ll be miffed. There are also regular free films about French culture at the St Kilda Road gallery. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Festivals/Film.asp

+----------------------------------------------------+

TALKS
There is a talk associated with The Age exhibition of cartoons at the State Library. If you haven’t seen the exhibition, it is small and of high quality featuring cartoonists such as Leunig and Petty. I thoroughly recommend it. There is also a free discussion based on the exhibition “Australians in Hollywood” at the Arts Centre. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/100GT/Arts/Workshops.asp

The Immigration Museum also has a talk by Ann Synan, author of “We Came With Nothing: Story of the Sale Migrant Holding Centre”. Don’t try coming with nothing though – admission is $12. Details at: http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/Museums/Immigration.asp

MARKETS
Farmers’ markets this weekend at Boronia, Kew, Buninyong, Drouin, Echuca, Talbot, Yarra Glen,.Boneo, Canterbury, Bright, Numurkah, Rushworth, Berwick, Chelsea, Craigieburn, Cowrie, Daylesford, Warburton, Williamstown, Rockbank, Barooga, Daylesford, Invermay, Colac and Telstra Dome. TOURISM NEWS
Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses White Hat Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May 2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed, Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find details of the tour at White Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at Qantas In Flight Magazine.
