Film

There was a time when if you saw a person with their raincoat pulled up around their ears furtively shuffling up a lane and into a cinema they were going to see a film with lots of naughty bits. If you notice such behaviour in Melbourne at the moment it probably means the person is off to see an intellectually stimulating film with no nudity at the Melbourne Film Festival. They have to do it secretly because they are too ashamed to admit to their family and friends that they would rather do that than stay home and watch Big Brother.

There is also a film launch at Fed Square based around the homeless in Melbourne. Details at Film Festivals in Melbourne.

New age festival

Melbourne’s New Age and Psychic Festival is at Healesville this Sunday featuring a range of services such as numerology readings and aura photographs.

Reader feedback

“I am suitably impressed with the knowledgeable answers from Clyde The Celery Capital. I henceforth propose that all school children should be sent to Clyde to gain a REAL education in Australian history. Other mums from the local school are in agreement, so Clyde can expect approximately 43.5 children, arriving via express post next week. (The .5 wanted to see the VFL team University at the MCG,again).
Could you possibly do an article about "lost" suburbs of Melb? IE: Montague is hardly known of, Jordanville has been swallowed up by Ashburton, etc.
Off to contemplate my naval in the hammock, under the gum tree, with the chooks realigning my chakras.
Rowie”

The White Hat Quiz

How well do you know Melbourne?

Firstly a reminder of the last quiz.
William Buckley’s name has entered our colloquial language. However there are a few other Victorians who share that honour. Complete the following:

  1. As game as …
  2. Up there …
  3. He’s got more front than … (the store named after the man)
  4. She’s had more farewells than …
  5. It’s a joke … (a bit trickier that one)
  6. Finally, an unfounded rumour is often referred to by the name of a blacksmith from Shepparton. Why

Obviously this was too easy because we had tons of correct answers and responses from all over the place.

.“Hello, I live in Brisbane but I was delighted to discover that I think I know most of the answers to the recent quiz.
This means that sayings from earlier times in Victoria have now spread Australia-wide.
Although my great grandfather, twice Mayor of Fitzroy, was the founder of the Fitzroy Football Club and chairman of the Melbourne Metropolitan Water Board that sewered Melbourne. Hence the sayings were probably used amongst family members (although I don’t remember that happening too often).
Cheers,
Barbara”

“Gee, that was fun for an expatriate. Not that any one of those would mean a darn thing to the people in this New Mexico town so it was a solitary pleasure. I don’t mind not knowing the first one – as game as?? -- but please tell me about “Joyce”. I know that one, but can’t for the life of me remember what it means.
Nancy”

“Love your newsletter. This is my first go at the quiz - I got quite excited when I realised I actually might know some of the answers!
LP”

“I'll give it a try as an "older person".
Jackie/Thomastown”

“Being a bear of very little brain (and less than a quarter of a century old), I've had trouble coming up with answers to your quizzes, but I'll have a go given that no one knocked over the last one:

Thanks Pat and all you others who sent in answers. There are no prizes – just the satisfaction of sitting on the tram (those in Brisbane and New Mexico will have to improvise) knowing that you are a superior human being to the person on either side of you.

Now to this week’s quiz.

Where in Melbourne would you find:

  1. A loo with a view
  2. Barocca style furniture
  3. Gog and Magog
  4. A bust of Nellie Melba (Hint – it’s where she gave her final, final, final farewell concert)
  5. The words “do no spit” painted on the walls and why
