Festivals & fairs

This Saturday is a Vietnamese Lantern Festival at Fed Square where Aunty Betty and Uncle George can get to eat Vietnamese food without having to venture into the ‘scary suburbs’. There is a Spring Fair at Collingwood College with stalls, food, activities and climbing wall so that the students can climb up the wall for a change instead of the teachers. There is an orchid festival in Maribyrnong and a cymbidium festival in Ararat. A cymbidium is an orchid that went to University. Details at Festivals & Fairs in Melbourne.

Family stuff

The Royal Melbourne Show starts this week. This is where many Melbourne kids get their first experience at recycling. You bring the showbags home then sort the rubbish into different piles. Details everywhere.

Tomorrow is an event called ‘The Big Draw’ at ArtPlay in the city and on Sunday there is a one day children’s festival at Gasworks Park in Port Melbourne.

There are activities on Friday morning at the children’s garden in the Botanic Gardens called ‘Tunes in the Trees and suitable for 2-3 year olds details at Family and children's events in Melbourne.

Film

There are Greek and Russian film festivals on this week. Details at Film Festivals in Melbourne.

Fashion

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week with tons of events. If you were expecting models on catwalks then you are beyond help – they’re called runways now sweetie. The publicity for one event promoting the uniqueness of Melbourne says “For the ultimate VACATION . . pack your sexiest SWIMMERS . .” . Forget about globalisation – Sydenyisation is the real threat to our language. There is a fashion bazaar at Fed Square on Sunday. Details at Fashion in Melbourne.

Music

Nana Maskouri has a concert at Hamer Hall as part of her farewell tour. However the tour is called Farewell Tour 2005 – I’m suspicious. The Australian Boys Choir has a welcome home concert and has been warned that if they sing ‘that song’ they’ll immediately be sent overseas again. There is an ongoing festival of music at Darebin and at North Melbourne Town Hall is a performance involving a “mixture of Jacques Brel, industrial noise and eclectic post-classical music” where the performers will be involved in “deconstruction”. I don’t know what post-classical music is, but I know that deconstruction in music just means leaving out all the notes you can’t play. For details, go to our home page and choose the drop down menu under “Music”.

Reader feedback

“In a few weeks time, it will be school holidays, apart from bringing my child to Luna Park, what else I can do with my child in Melbourne.
Norman”

Norman, we’ll see what we can do in next week’s newsletter.

“I recently saw an amusing little follow up to your quiz question around 15th July. The quiz question asked where and why the words "do not spit" were painted on the walls. (For anyone not paying attention that week, the words appear on tiles on the up/down ramps at Flinders St Station). Anyway, watching a program filed somewhere overseas (Foreign Correspondent?) the camera zoomed in on a sign which demanded "Do not spit here or there". Oh well, I thought it was funny.
Cheers, Karen.”

Solar House Day

There are solar house demonstrations around the state on Sunday (except for Ballarat because they can’t remember which day the sun comes out). There you can ask questions like “Is it more efficient to use your limited budget for solar panels for hot water (which may not get fully used) or to generate electricity to pump back into the grid.?”

Postgraduate research

If you thought postgraduate research was beyond you, then think again. It’s not really all that hard. Each week at White Hat we get numbers of emails from postgraduate researchers. Here are some recent examples.

“Dear Sir/Madam, I am a postgraduate student in University of Western Sydney. To fulfil my assignment, I have to find out who are the owners of the shopping centres in Melbourne. Also, I need to find out who built (the construction company) them as well. . . . Therefore, I would be grateful if you could provide me with the relevant information . . . “

“To whom it may concern,

1. My name is xxxxx, I have to do a presentation on xxxx, can you please give me all the information you can at this point on xxxx. 2. Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated.”

The request came from an email address at defence.gov.au and was registered ‘unclassified’.

“I am doing my masters at the University of Melbourne . . . Your article on David Unaipon mentions several of his inventions. Please forward information on what these inventions do and how they work as I need it for my research.”

The Story Continues

Being the True History of the wearer of the White Hat

The hat continued to glow. It spread a strange ethereal light around the room. It was a light that, although eerie, seemed to shine both into the future and the past. The patterns on the wallpaper seemed to gain an third dimension and the posters on the wall seemed like windows opening onto other worlds. It was a feeling I had only ever experienced once – in childhood after having a third serving of trifle.

A voice which I could not quite make out seemed to be gently urging me to do something. But what? I stood bathed in gentle pulsating light until I could make out the words. The voice was saying “Put me on”.

And there we leave the saga for another week because I can hear newsletter reader uttering the same call.

Shows

This week is the grand final of the Rock Eisteddfod. This is one of my favourite events where highly talented kids get together, hone their skills for months, are inclusive of a range of abilities, are supportive and encouraging of other acts and all come together in a whole that is larger than the individual contributions. It’s a concept that would never work on television. Of course they have been so busy rehearsing their act that they haven’t learned how to add up the marks or spell eisteddfod. At the same venue (Rod Laver Arena) is a Bollywood spectacular with a riot of singing, dancing, arms, navels, beads, bells, teeth, more navels and colour everywhere. In the audience will be our local Indian Australians who have adopted the traditional native garb of Melbourne - black.
