New listingsWe now have a ton of events listed for January and February including lots of free entertainment in the parks. Some of the old favourites seem to have disappeared (eg stargazing) but there are also new ones like Painting in the Park – easels and paints supplied. For details go to our home page and choose the appropriate city parks and gardens from the drop-down menu. Ballet Under the StarsTonight and tomorrow night is ballet under the stars at the music bowl. When queuing at the gates, those at gate one should stand in first position, those at gate two should stand in second position and so on. Details at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Christmas LightsWe have posted a list of readers recommended Christmas lights at Christmas Lights in Melbourne. However, we have late breaking news from Clyde “Dear White Hat, You may like to save some readers a very long drive to Clyde and let them know that the family responsible for the marvellous display has sold their home. They took all of the decorations with them but won't be decorating the new home until next year. You are probably commenting on my thoughtfulness right about now but I was not driven by altruism. Imagine living next door to the Griswalds, except on a dusty unmade road. Imagine as many as a thousand visitors a night, some in tourist busses, driving past your home. Imagine countless visitors to your home each night, all thinking that it would be nice to visit you after they see the Chrissy lights? I am not really an Ebenezer Scrooge and I love Christmas but I admit that I am looking forward to a more peaceful festive season and fewer potholes in our road. I'll probably still get a hundred phone calls asking about the lights because we have the same surname (husband's brother) as the "Griswalds" and they had an unlisted number. I believe that the Christmas lights at Ivanhoe are spectacular! Merry Christmas, Reader feedback
Family activitiesThis week new circus performances commence at the Docklands. On Sunday there is free entertainment based around Care Bears. Those of you who are under 7 should start your campaign to attend now. Start wandering around the house chanting “CARE BEAR FED SQUARE”. Keep repeating it and seek out percussive accompaniment to reinforce the message and by Sunday morning you will find that the big people have given in and off you go to the Care Bears. This technique is known as ATTRITION (say it after me AH – TRISH – ON). Good. Next week we will teach you another technique. There are also lots of new listings of free activities for children over the holidays. Details of all these at Children's & Family Activities in Melbourne. Human Rights DayThis Saturday is International Human Rights Day. To our knowledge, there is no International Human Responsibilities Day. Two special eventsThis Wednesday in Melbourne is what we think is a quite special concert in Melbourne. Two talented young chamber music groups performing mainly the music of Dvorak and finishing with the master of the tango – Piazzolla. Admission is free but donations for the MS foundation will be welcome. The three young men who form the piano trio are cricket fanatics and so named themselves the Benaud Trio. You may wish to go along as a group wearing your Richie Benaud wigs. The string quartet named themselves after the town of Tailem Bend so others of you may wish to go along wearing the national dress of Tailem Bend. The concert is in the atmospheric surroundings of BMW Edge at Fed Square. We will be there. Details at BMW Edge. On Wednesday and Thursday is a recreation of Charles Dickens reading his story ‘A Christmas Carol’. In this performance, Phillip Zachariah who has researched Dickens’ public performances performs the part of Dickens as well as taking on the style of each and every character in the story. This entertainment, which we first saw two years ago is in the best tradition of the Victorian era. It will not suit those whose attention span has been honed on making it through to the next punchline at a comedy venue, but it will reward those who know and love their Dickens. Highly recommended. Details at Theatre in Melbourne. MusicThis Sunday you can enjoy a free concert featuring the music of Percy Grainger at the ABC studios at Southbank. In 1895 Sir Henry Wood instituted the London Promenade Concerts which still continue their grand tradition. His passion was to set up concerts of the finest music performed at the highest level with but in an informal atmosphere that would attract people who would not normally attend classical music concerts. An important feature of Henry Wood’s grand dream and heritage was cheap ticket prices for families and those prepared to stand. This Saturday there is an entertainment in the Yarra Valley called Last Night of the Proms. Tickets are $129 per head. Details at Yarra Valley. SpiegeltentThe Spiegeltent is only around for one more week. It is a great atmospheric place to go after a meal or show in town. From the White Hat InboxFROM THE WHITE HAT INBOX SMS received at 2.30pm, 6 December “right thumb out of plaster!! i can text again!! hello all!” SMS received at 1.05am 7 December “welcome back to the thumb party tonight! be there!” Email received 8 December
Country VictoriaThis weekend you can enjoy a trip on the wine train on the Mornington Peninsula Christmas concertsThis week there are a variety of Christmas concerts. There is a Scandinavian Christmas Concert. Take along your little princess and with a bit of luck she may establish a friendship with a Scandinavian prince (I believe the Danish one has already been taken). Details at Toorak House. The Camberwell Chorale were promised an overseas trip at the end of the year so they are all taking the ferry to Williamstown to give a Christmas concert of nine lessons and carols. Details at Wiiliamstown. The White Hat QuizHow well do you know Melbourne?Just one question to prepare you for the summer of sport.
