The White Hat Melbourne NewsletterArchived Newsletter No.171 - 28 April 2006Contents
FestivalsOn Sunday there are Dutch Orange Day celebrations at Fed Square. People wear orange, do strange things, have a downright yolly time and every Dutchman in Melbourne will be there (except for the group of small Dutch boys that CityLink employs to plug the leaks in the Domain Tunnel). Also this weekend is the Kellybrook Winery Cider Festival celebrating cider and all things from the west of England. Folk music, ploughman and squatters lunches and Morris dancers attempting to prove that the English can be just as silly as the Dutch. Details at Ethnic Festivals in Melbourne. New marketPhillip Island has a new day/night market that is licensed. That way, after hubby has had a few Pinot Noir’s he won’t ask “how much did that tat cost?” It runs on the 3rd Sunday of the month but there is a special opening day this Sunday. Details at Markets in Country Victoria. Family stuffThis weekend is Guide Dogs Open Day with lots of family activities. Details at Animal Festivals in Melbourne. FilmNext week is the start of the St Kilda Film Festival and the following weekend sees the first Australian appearance of the Machinima Film Festival from New York. Machinima uses the characters / backgrounds / technology of a computer game to create animated films which sounds like fun. The following weekend is the Bunninyong Film Festival. Details at Film Festivals in Melbourne. Mushroom Huntshe mushroom hunts on the Mornington Peninsula are running again on Sundays during May. Details at Food & Wine Events in Victoria. Victoria's Hidden GemsA romantic day in Spa Country
TheatreOn Tuesday there is a free play reading of The Revisionist at the State Library. This deals, among other things, with the Darville/Demidenko affair, so don’t expect to see too many critics or academics who promoted the “authenticity” of Helen Demidenko’s story. Similarly there is a production of Mrs Petrov’s Shoe which also refers to the D/D affair. Details at Theatre in Melbourne. ComedyThe Comedy Festival continues in Melbourne. Joan Rivers is having her First Annual Farewell Tour – it remains to be seen whether she has more farewells than you-know-who. On Monday is the annual legal comedy debate at the Athenaeum. Details at Comedy in Melbourne. Alternative stuffToday (Friday) and tomorrow there is a live display by stencil and graffiti artists at the Vineyard in Acland Street St Kilda. This weekend is a 'Living New Expo’ at Flemington Racecourse and a ‘Feast for the Body & Soul’ at Box Hill. Details at Lifestyle Festivals in Melbourne. Country VictoriaThis weekend there is the Sothern Grampians Promenade of Sacred Music, the Grampians Grape Grazing Festival. The Ranges Folk Festival in the Dandenongs (just look for the youngsters picking the banjo on the balcony), the Hairy Lemon Festival at Tallangatta, the Bright Autumn Festival, the Nagambie After Vintage Festival, the Koroit Irish Festival, the Wimmera German Festival and the Myrniong Historic Car Sprint.
