Music

“Where’s Hume?” “Dunno. Do you know where Hume is?” Nah, it must be pretty small – they don’t even have a station”. At this time of year you will find confused groups of musos standing on stations trying to find where Hume is so they can be part of the Hume Music Festival. More details can be found at Music Festivals in Melbourne. On Saturday there is a free concert in the Great Hall of the National Gallery celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ABC radio program called Music Deli. On Sunday at St John’s Southgate there is a performance by a mandolin orchestra. Everyone should hear a mandolin orchestra once in their lives. There are a ton of classical music performances in Melbourne at the moment. You can find a listing at Classical Music in Melbourne or for more detailed information you can subscribe to our classical music newsletter (which will be out RRSN). “I think Hume’s near Casey.” “Where’s Casey?” “Dunno – it hasn’t got a station either.”

Last week's quiz

“Dear Editor,
We've pinned your quiz from the 29/6/06 newsletter on our staff kitchen wall - some of the answers have been a bit silly but is it possible to have a list of the answers so I can let everyone know?
Kath”

OK Kath here are some answers (with help from Murray, Jane & Stuart and others).

Please note: This section of the newsletter has been removed as it forms part of a forthcoming publication or because it is forms part of our Questing activities. If you find yourself on a tour where the guide is White Hat Accredited they are likely to know the answer to many questions you may have in this area. Reader Feedback

"Leanne, EVERY mother knows 'Snow Whites' grow into 'Barbies". Something to look forward to!
Gail”

“It's amazing what you said about the Design Centre website- I clicked on it and they had yellow print that you could hardly read followed by pale grey- almost as difficult, incredible!!!!!!!!!!, never got to the graphics,
regards, Jan”

“Hi I love your newsletter - please don't stop publishing it. I work in a busy workplace and most of the other employees are visitors from overseas as well as newly settled people. They often ask me about places to see in Melbourne - I have lived here all my life and you have made my city much more interesting telling me about things I have never heard about, as well as items and acitivities of interest I never knew about. I have let everyone know about your wonderful site - they all love it. It gives them ideas about things to do on the days off. Keep up the good work.
Cheers Wendy”

“Think you newsletter is great. Wondering if you know of any such instrument for other cities, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane more specifically
Andrew”

Sorry Andrew, we don’t. Maybe some of our readers know.

Dance

All next week the Sydney Dance Company are performing The Director’s Cut by Graeme Murphy. This dance company and choreographer hold a special place in Australian dance, so it is a pleasure to go and see them in Melbourne. Just the place to take your friend who is staying in your new apartment with the designer vase and rather cute wooden ducks which you friend bought at a market in Mornington with the boat moored outside in docklands. Details at Dance in Melbourne.

  White Hat

Theatre

The Russell Peters shows are sold out so don’t expect to pick up a ticket for those. If you fancy some G&S there is a production of Iolanthe in South Yarra. For country readers, there is currently a production of several Henry Lawson stories touring all over Victoria including a couple of places beyond the bitumen and several that are even beyond the black stump. Details at Theatre in Melbourne.

Antiques & Collectables Fair

The following weekend there is an antiques and collectables fair at Williamstown. Just the place to get rid of those rather kitsch wooden ducks which were given to you by a friend who has since disappeared with someone at docklands who has a bigger boat, together with that designer vase which you always secretly felt was rather ugly.

The White Hat Quiz

How well do you know Melbourne?

Ball games

  1. Australian rules football was codified in Melbourne in 1858 (you can see the handwritten rules reproduced on a large scale in the new MCG entry area). When were soccer and rugby codified? (a short answer will do).
  2. In the 1860s an Aboriginal cricket team toured England. Name a player in that team and the area he came from.
  3. Near Royal Park (on the other side of the railway line) you will find a baseball ground. Similarly in Victoria Park in Ballarat you will find baseball pitches. Why did they grow up in these places?
  4. Name a male and a female Australian squash champion.
  5. After a colonial cricket match with England, a Melbourne woman burnt the bails and created ‘The Ashes’. What was her name and where will you find a monument to her?
  6. Before the construction of Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Park tennis complex where were major tennis tournaments played in Melbourne?
  7. Since the early days of Melbourne, certain sporting facilities and clubs were established on public parkland. Over time some of these sporting facilities were fenced off from the public and were only available for ‘members’ or paying customers. What ball game has excised the greatest amount of Melbourne’s public parkland in this way? (Think carefully).

No prizes – just glory and a warm inner glow.
