Melbourne's Famous Pubs - a literary pub tour
For 10 years White hat Tours operated a highly acclaimed and successful Literary Tour of Melbourne's Famous Pubs. It was with regret that in 2002 we decided to discontinue these tours The reasons for discontinuing the tour are mainly connected with the business and marketing considerations of running a pub at the present time. Some results have been: - Refurbishment and gentrification at Young & Jackson's has no doubt been good for business, but it also lost its soul by driving out the artists, intelligentsia and Bohemians.
- Many hotels now find it necessary to play music at such a high volume that their it is now no longer possible for patrons to be entertained by an actor performing excerpts from literary works associated with the place and telling about the stories, scandals, characters and events that took place within those walls.
Do atmospheric historic pubs and bars still exist in Melbourne? Yes they do, but of course once they appear in a guide book or a high profile web site they are no longer a 'hidden gem'. In respect to the owners and patrons of these places we try to keep them that way and only occasionally drop in on one of other tours (our Murder and Mystery Tour or Lamplight Tour) if we judge the group we have is appropriate. Maybe at some time in the future we will re-institute this tour. In the meantime, you will often get some pointers to Melbourne's hidden gems (including pubs) in our newsletter. | Page last updated: | 04 October, 2007 | | URL:

Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
