The White Hat Guide to Ballarat
What can I say about Ballarat? It is the place where I grew up. As the twig is bent . . . I thought all large country towns had main streets with gardens and statues in the middle. I thought all large towns had trams. I thought that all kids in Australia could hop on a bike and as long as they were back before sunset nobody would be too worried. I thought that the hills known as Warrenheip and Buninyong were mountains because they were called Mount Warrenheip and Mount Buninyong (even though they were not as challenging as Mount Hollard-Smith - but you will need to ask a local about that). I thought all towns had large botanical gardens with statuaries. I thought all gardens had bloated roses known as begonias (see the White Hat newsletter of 26th February 2003). I thought that when anyone's grandfather got sick they would go to the cemetery to consult the 'chinaman'. I thought that all lakes had reeds and black swans. I thought all large towns had a School of Mines. I thought that Melbourne was big and imposing and where neighbouring teenage girls went for mysterious operations and Melbourne started at the Sunshine railway gates. But then I went to university in Melbourne, and that is where the rot set in . . . This area contains Beaufort, Creswick, Linton, Casterton and Buninyong. An alternative spelling of Ballarat was Ballaarat which still appears in many older documents, and in fact the lyrics of the city song proclaim: "B A double L double A R AT, It spells Ballaarat and it's home sweet home to me.

White Hat - THE place to find markets in Victoria

place to list and find markets in Melbourne & Victoria and our
markets pages consistently receive over 1,000 visitors a day with over
3,000 a day at weekends. Unlike many
websites which merely LIST markets, White Hat VISITS markets as
witnessed by the photographs. Although we visit hundreds of markets
every year we can never cover all of them so please let us know if any
of our information is out of date. With details on over 400 markets,

TOURISM NEWS
Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
