The White Hat Guide to the T & G Building

The T & G Buildings (now the Melbourne headquarters of KPMG and labelled KPMG House) was described as "Melbourne's most beautiful building" in 1930. Its clean lines form a strong contrast to some of the excesses of the 'boom style' which can be found close by. The interior of the building was substantially gutted and rebuilt to meet the requirements of the 1990s, including an ingenious computer controlled natural lighting system. The large open space inside includes a number of large glass blocks depicting various Melbourne icons (see if you can spot the mistakes). Despite the refurbishment, the original building looks from the outside much as it did when built in 1928. It is an excellent example of how a building can be made usable for modern commerce without doing violence to its outside appearance and the streetscape. Note the small Napier Waller fresco above the Collins Street entrance.
| Please Note: The T&G Building will be open to the public on 24th & 25th July 2010 as part of Melbourne's Open House. Details of the buildings open to the public that weekend can be found at The White Hat Guide to Open Days in Melbourne. |

Qantas In Flight Magazine chooses
White Hat
Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
details of the tour at White
Hat Tour of Melbourne Cemetery and view the article at
Qantas In Flight Magazine. |
