Shrove Tuesday Tour of Melbourne Cemetery - From Pancakes to Gumbo
Shrove
Tuesday is the last day before the commencement of the Christian season
of Lent. During Lent it has been traditional for Christians to forego
certain pleasures. For instance many Christians ate no meat during Lent.
Thus, the last day before this period of abstention provided a last
chance to indulge in certain pleasures that were to be foregone for the
next 40 days. In the English and Irish tradition this often meant a
feast of pancakes and hence the popular name 'Pancake Day'. Latin
communities were much less restrained and and the period leading up to
Lent was Mardi Gras. In the southern states of America, this day was
known as Fat Tuesday (because all manner of fatty food could be indulged
in for the last time) and was traditionally accompanied with processions
and parties - especially in New Orleans.
This tour of the cemetery will commence outside the gates in Hardy's
Reserve with freshly made pancakes. The tour will then enter the
cemetery where your entertaining guide will point out and explain the
fascinating symbolism on the graves related to Shrove Tuesday together
with stories related to occurrences in that day in Melbourne's history.
At the end of the formal part of the tour, guests are invited to stay
on and take part in a Fat Tuesday Second Line procession around the
outside of the cemetery followed by traditional New Orleans food and Fat
Tuesday partying.
The tour runs from 3pm to 5pm, the procession from 5.30 to 6.30 and
the partying continues until 10pm. Bookings ($20 per head include
pancakes and tour) must be made by 17th February 2012 as spaces are
limited. For details email shrovetuesdaytour@whitehat.com.au |

Cemetery Tour as its featured Australian tour for May

There are many fine historical tours
throughout Australia including cemetery tours. From these, the
prestigious Qantas In Flight Magazine has chosen the White Hat Tour
of Melbourne Cemetery as its featured Australian tour for the May
2007 edition. This tour was also featured by ABC radio on 24 May and
will feature in a documentary series on Burke and Wills to be shown
on European television in 2008. The tour has been operating for many years and has won
praise from a wide range of sources. This is not a dry and stuffy
tour but in keeping with all White Hat offerings it is Informed,
Intelligent, Independent (and occasionally) Irreverent. You can find
