Most shopping strips in Melbourne will now boast at least one Chinese grocery. Often quite small, these groceries will usually stock a range of dried and canned goods, as well fresh vegetables and herbs used in Asian cooking.

Most of these Chinese groceries stock ingredients for a range of Asian cuisines - not just Chinese.

Larger stores will stock staples such as noodles (fresh and dried), a wide range of fungi, tofu and bean curd, You will also find more esoteric items such as zedoary, ginko nuts, Kluwak nuts, krachai powder, candlenutss sea laver.  

Chinese and Asian vegetables can be found at many fresh food markets, but particularly those in Footscray, Richmond, Springvale and Box Hill. There you will be able to buy fresh ginger turmeric and galangal, various cabbages and bok choys, daikon, gourds and bitter melons, kohlrabi, lotus leaves and roots, water parsley and water celery and much, much more.

Several decades ago, if you wanted Vietnamese ingredients you would go to a Chinese grocer. Nowadays, this culinary colonisation has been reversed, and you are more likely to go to a Vietnamese grocery to buy Chinese ingredients.
