Full details at Friends of the Latrobe Cottage

La Trobe's cottage was the home of Victoria's first Lieutenant-Governor, Charles La Trobe. He transported the pre-fabricated dwelling with him when he came to Australia in 1839 and erected it in Jolimont (an area reputedly named by his wife and close to the present day MCG).

Over time it gradually fell into disrepair, and in 1960 the remains were purchased, shifted to the King's Domain and restored according to drawings of the period. Fortunately it was possible to track down many of its original furnishings which are now on display in the restored cottage.

After La Trobe left Melbourne, Toorak House became the home of Victoria's Governors until the purpose-built Government House was completed.

The National Trust now maintain La Trobe's Cottage together with its displays and it is open to the public on the hours listed above.
