The White Hat Guide to Wednesday Markets in Melbourne & Victoria

On a standard Wednesday in Melbourne you will find several of the larger suburban markets open in including Footscray, Preston and South Melbourne Markets. However if you are prepared to take a trip to Mornington, about an hour from Melbourne, you will find one of Victoria's largest craft markets.

Ballarat Antique Market This large antique market with a wide range of items is located on two floors of an old school building and also contains a museum with a small entry charge.It is morein the nature of a very large antique store and does not appear to have the space to cater for casual stallholders. Brunswick Market A general indoor market with long term stall and shop holders with butchers, a fishmonger, poultry, delis, dry goods, fruit and vegetables and some variety and clothing stores. 6am to 6pm Monday to Saturdays (Frid open till 7pm). Caribbean Gardens Market A large market picnic area and a big range of new and second hand goods. On Wednesdays entry is free and there is access to and general market, food stalls and playground. On Sundays there is an entry fee and as well as the market there is a children's train and boat rides, rock climbing. Caribbean Gardens Market is close to the Eastlink freeway and is now oppen Fridays as well as Wednesdays and Sundays. CERES Organic Food & Craft Market CERES Organic Market and Shop recently celebrated their 10th birthday. The market sells fresh organic fruit and veg with an emphais on locally grown produce. Daylesford Mill Markets A large indoor market with an emphasis on antiques, retro fashion and collecatables. New stallholders are welcome. Geelong Mill Markets Until recently, this location hosted a large and popular market. That market has relocated to Newcomb (see below). The remaining Geelong Mills Matket now has a large array of retro advertising signs, furniture, and larger and quirky mechanical and industrial equipment. White Hat can recommend this market as a good source for those looking to do a quirky fitout as well as to theatre companies and film-makers looking for genuine period props. in.cube8r gallery in.cube8r gallery is a shop/gallery which runs like a long term market. It is open to anyone who makes things by hand and supports all things craft, art and hand-made in Melbourne. The gallery is divided up into glass cubicles, shelves, racks and partitions which artists can lease for a small weekly cost over a three month period. There is no commission on items sold. When Whitehat visited in June2008 we discovered a treasure trove of new upcoming artisans as well as designers like Julie Ughetti, with an international reputation. Mill Markets Newcomb A large indoor market with permenant and casual stallholders selling antiques,collectables, vintage clothing, homewares, memmorabilia and retro fashions. Mornington Wednesday Market This is not one of your "let's try it and see if it works" markets that has cropped up in recent years - this one has been around for 30 years rain, hail or shine and shows no signs of getting any less popular. Preston Market Preston market is a large market selling fresh produce, meat, poultry and fish as well as a wide range of general goods. Warrnambool Mill Markets A market operated in the same style as the mills markets in Newtown and Daylesford.
