Food & Seed Swap at Slow Food Farmers’ Market
As mentioned in the edition of White Hat Food
Newsletter focusing on 'Sustainable Food', Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA)
is holding their first ever fruit and veg/seed swap at the Abbotsford Convent
Slow Food Farmer’s Market. If you’ve had a bountiful crop this winter and ended
up with more fruit and veg than you know what to do with, they’d love you to
come along and take part. Not only is this a great opportunity to show off your
skills, but to also chat with with like-minded individuals and to have fun. The
aim is to get members like yourself talking and discussing the successes (and
failures!) of your efforts in sustainable gardening while sharing your produce
as well as your knowledge. It’s also a great opportunity to swap some seeds as
Spring approaches. There will be SGA volunteers heading along to give you the
latest happenings on the PODs project – Productive, Organic and Diverse
gardening groups. If you have a passion for gardening, want to connect with your
community, meet like-minded people and make a genuine difference to the
environment, why not get involved? This will be a fantastic opportunity to
network and get your own POD up and running.
Fountain Gate is a large conventional shopping mall and they have teamed with In Season Markets to present produce from local growers and makers on a regular basis. White Hat has not yet had a chance to check it out and will tell you more once we have done so.

Until recently, this location hosted a large and popular market. That market has relocated to Newcomb (see below). The remaining Geelong Mills Matket now has a large array of retro advertising signs, furniture, and larger and quirky mechanical and industrial equipment. White Hat can recommend this market as a good source for those looking to do a quirky fitout as well as to theatre companies and film-makers looking for genuine period props. It now functions more as a warehouse so give a ring before making a special trip.

Home Harvest Exchange - food swap
Exchanging produce has been going on since the earliest days of European
settlement and for most born before the 1960s (and many after that) would
have been a regular part of life. With changing lifestyles and serious vegetable
gardens, chooks and other livestock disappearing from quarter acre blocks the
practice has become less common. However White Hat has recently noticed a
growing trend to revive the practice in a more formal manner and where better to
do it than Heronswood
with its wonderful program of preserving heritage varieties of fruit and
vegetables. So locals are urged to bring their excess fresh home-grown produce
and go home with someone else's. As the publicity says "Meet the neighbours,
swap recipes, build community and healthy living; reduce food waste and
food miles; and stretch the
budget. Fruit, vegies, herbs, eggs, jams, and other produce. No money
exchanged. Bring your produce and a smile. One bunch of parsley is enough."
Meet some of the colourful personalities that grow a diverse range of fruit, vegetables & seedlings, produce chocolates, nougat, honey, wine, free range eggs, jams, ice-cream and so much more. There is a special twilight market from 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday 23rd December.
The Hurstbridge Farmers’ Market, has an emphasis on local fresh food and produce that is grown, reared, caught or made by the person selling the produce. White Hat reminds city dwellers that Hurstbridge is accessible by train and that a Sunday Saver ticket costing next to nothing. Why not make special trip and enjoy a day in community that has retained its country atmosphere?

A large outdoor trash and treasure market in the carpark of the Bridge Inn

goats, poultry, rabbits and other livestock attract plenty of attention as do
the lively auctions. This is a White Hat favourite - a genuine country market

The White Hat Guide to Mernda
Market.
A true community Farmers Market held on the picturesque Village Green in the heart of Metung. White Hat can recommend a visit to Metung as one of the more relaxing venues for a farmers' market in Victoria.
A large indoor market with permenant and casual stallholders selling antiques, collectables, vintage clothing, homewares, memmorabilia and retro fashions. White Hat suggests that if you enjoy the Chapel Street Bazaar in Melbourne you will find a similar range of items at the Newcomb Mill Market but with more space to move.
Some markets situated inside shopping malls are rather sad affairs, but not this one. White Hat found a range of quality hand made goods as wll as furniture and homemaking goods. This is just the place to pick up some lovingly made baby clothes. There is also a a strong community feel which sets apart from many markets of this type.
