1904 - 1959
Hubert Clifford came from Bairnsdale in
East Gippsland. He
studied chemistry at Melbourne University but after graduation went to
England where he pursued a career in music.
Although Clifford possibly received his greatest recognition as a
composer of 'light music' he also composed a number of major works in a
serious but accessible style. One of these is Symphony 1940. He also
worked as a musical director (conductor) on a number of films.
