Potter Museum of Art
The
Ian Potter Museum of Art at Melbourne University is worth visiting both for
its collection and its own architecture. Designed by one of Melbourne's most
interesting contemporary architects, Nonda Katsalidis, it incorporates parts
of older university buildings such as the Napier Waller's Art Deco stained
glass window from the old Wilson Hall
(From time to time, the gallery has exhibitions which entail an entry
charge, but these only occupy one area and access to the rest of the gallery
is free.)
The gallery is a bequest to the university from the businessman Sir Ian
Potter. Thank you Mr Potter for providing one of the places in Melbourne
which I enjoy visiting on a regular basis.
His bequest also funds the Ian Potter Centre (the National Gallery of
Victoria's Australian collection) at
Federation Square.
