Pharlap

racehorse

Perhaps the only other animals to capture the imagination of the Australian public in such a way were Archer and Chainsaw. Archer twice walked all the way from Nowra and back to win the first two Melbourne Cups. (Nowra in New South Wales is 800 km from Melbourne.) Then there was Chainsaw - the bucking Brahman bull - but that is another story.

You can still wonder at Pahrlap's mighty frame - he has pride of place (now preserved and stuffed) in the Melbourne Museum. For generations, he has been the most popular exhibit in the museum.
