The annual Victoria Street Lunar Festival has been running since 2000,
and White Hat has attended and enjoyed this festival during a number of
these years. During that time he festival has grown from small but enthusiastic
beginnings through to being one of the biggest street festivals in
Victoria.
As befits a street lined with many Vietnamese restaurants and cafes, the
festival is full of food stalls and there are plenty of sideshow stalls and
rides for entertainment. A central stage presents cultural entertainment
appropriate to the community and the new year.
There will be special fireworks at at 9pm and expect to see firecrackers
together with Dragon & Lion Dances throughout the day.
Due to increased security at such large scale community events no
backpacks or suitcases will be allowed into the event. Similarly, no alcohol
can be taken into the event but it may be purchased at numbers of outdoor
and indoor cafes.
Parking is limited in the inner suburbs but public transport is
plentiful. You can take the train to North Richmond Station or trams
(numbers 109, 12 & 78) will get you there.
There is always plenty of Asian food, but we always start by heading for
the beef in betel leaves.
