Mr Eternity
single word philosopher, social activist
1884 - 30th July 1967
For 40 years, Arthur Stace cryptically chalked the
word 'Eternity' in perfect copperplate on the footpaths of Sydney and
elsewhere.
A silent reminder of this inscription can be found in Sydney
Park - appropriately enough with no plaque or other explanation. The chalked
inscription mysteriously appeared on the bell in the Sydney GPO tower in
1963. It has remained there ever since.
At the culmination of the millennium New Year's Eve
celebrations in Sydney, a giant reproduction of Stace's 'Eternity' was
illuminated by fireworks on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Arthur Stace's tombstone reads as
follows:
In Loving Memory Of
ELLEN ESTHER PEARL

ARTHUR MALCOM (MR ETERNITY)

At the foot of the grave a single word is engraved in
copperplate script -
