& Country New South Wales
Friday 8th August 2025
Scroll down for
full listing:
This day is the anniversary of the
Battle of Amiens, which was one of the most successful advances made by
Allied forces during the WWI. The efforts of the ANZAC Corps were orchestrated
by General Sir John Monash and
would be much lauded as an example of combined arms warfare in a conflict mostly
remembered for the stalemate of trench warfare. For those who value its place in
Australian history it has become known as 08-08.
On this day in 1880 Earle Page was
born. He was later to become Prime Minister of Australia.
On this day in 1909 Mary
MacKillop died.
On this day in 1959 the Aboriginal painter
Albert Namatjira died.

Chifley Home and Education Centre
In a quiet residential street in Bathurst is one of the country’s most
intimate museums — the former home of Prime Minister
Ben Chifley and his
wife, Elizabeth.
Whether your interest runs to Australian politics or
you’d like to step back in time, this unique museum and Education Centre
provides a glimpse into how the Chifleys lived, and offers an experience of
everyday life in the 1940’s. Its original collection of household
furnishings, kitchenware and personal effects date back to when the Chifleys
first occupied the house in 1914.
This is a house that saw the hardships
of the Great Depression, and wartime austerity. From rationing cards still
on the kitchen table to Mrs Chifley’s soap saver in the kitchen, 10 Busby
Street has little in common with The Lodge or Kirribilli House, and is all
the more interesting for it.
Entry fees apply. Full details at
