This day is designated by the United Nations as the World Day for Safety
and Health at Work.
On this day in 1996 the Port Arthur Massacre occurred where a lone gunman killed 35 people at the
historic site in Tasmania. Led by the then Prime Minister,
John Howard,
government introduced strong gun laws as well as buying back and destroying
assault weapons Australia has not experienced a massacre of
this nature sinc this introduction of strengthened gun laws.
