This day is celebrated across Australia as Father's Day. The tradition started in the USA in 1910 and was adopted in Australia in the late 1930s, although it has never been accorded the same significance as Mother's Day. Although most countries celebrate Father's Day in June, Australia does so in September. The reason is thought to be a commercial one. In Australia there are a number of public holidays through the middle months and September fits better into the retail calendar for a special 'push'. Also the start of spring coiincides well with gifts suitable for the outdoor activities often associated with fathers.

Eagle Farm Markets

Brisbane's weekly Eagle Farm Markets in Ascot is a large outdoor/indoor market held at Eagle Farm Racecourse every Sunday morning. There are over 100 stalls with fruit, vegetables, produce, clothing, accessories and lots more. White Hat is always impressed with the strong community atmosphere this market generates. There is an impressive array of gourmet foods on offer including olives, cheeses, pates, nuts, oils, honey, jams, herbs & spices and more. There is meat, seafood, artisan breads and cakes, game, hand crafted goods and fresh cut flowers at competitive prices. A small entry charge applies. Further details at The White Hat Guide to Eagle Farm Markets

Jan Power's Mitchelton Farmers Markets
A colourful bustling market selling fresh farm produce flowers breads artisan products meat fish poultry plants organics and food related objects. For those who are purist about framers' markets needing to be operated solely by farmers selling their produce then this may not be for you. However White Hat can recommend it as a combination of framers' market and mainstream market, and in the end if you are serious about the origins of the produce you buy you can always talk to the stallholders (which you still need to do at the 'holier-than thou farmers' markets anyway). There are plenty of exotic products, special promotions, entertaining events and chefs give cooking classes. ..
Manly Creative Markets
A relaxed market held in a pleasant pak by the water. Nobody is in a hurry in Manly on a Sunday. Browse around to see what the local creative types Have on offer. ..
Northey Street Organic Markets

The Valley Markets
A Brisbane institution and a great way to relax with plenty of cafes, bars and to choose from. White Hat suggests you check out the cheap eats while you are there.
